Erdos hosts China's first commercial-scale Fischer-Tropsch coal-to-liquids plant (China Energy Shenhua Ordos, commissioned 2009) and the Inner Mongolia Yitai 2 Mt/yr CTL plant; together making Erdos the global capital of coal-to-liquids technology demonstration. The local coal supply is the operator advantage; Erdos sits on the Northwest Coal Field, one of the world's largest coal deposits, and the plants run mine-mouth-fed at coal cost roughly half of seaborne import. Beyond CTL, the park operates coal-to-olefins (methanol-to-olefins via DMTO licensing), coal-to-ethylene-glycol (the alternative MEG route that competes with naphtha-based MEG from coastal complexes), and polyolefins. The natural-alkali soda-ash production from local salt-lake brine (Mengxi cluster) is a separate but commercially distinct stream that supplies northern Chinese glass and detergent markets at lower cost than synthetic soda-ash from Solvay-process plants. Two operator-distinct points. First, the climate is harsh: winter temperatures regularly drop below minus 30 °C, which affects outdoor process operations and adds heated-storage requirements for many products. Second, water is the single biggest expansion constraint; the Yellow River allocation cap on Inner Mongolia coal-chemistry is binding.
