Catalysts from China
Molecular sieves, activated alumina, refinery catalysts, hydroprocessing catalysts, ZSM-5, presulfiding agents like DMDS, for refining, petrochemical, and natural gas processing.
Catalysts are a different sourcing problem from bulk chemicals. The factory base is smaller, the specifications are tighter, the COA verification matters more, and the buyers are typically large-scale industrial operations, refineries, petrochemical plants, natural gas processors, gas-to-liquids facilities, where catalyst performance directly drives plant economics.
The Chinese catalyst producer set we work with covers molecular sieves (3A, 4A, 5A, 13X for various separation duties), activated alumina (alumina-based desiccants, claus catalyst supports, fluoride adsorbents), ZSM-5 zeolite, and refinery hydroprocessing catalysts (CoMo, NiMo, hydrocracking and hydrodesulfurization formulations). For presulfiding, dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) is the dominant working compound. Class 3 DG cargo with strict packaging and documentation requirements at the load port.
Pre-shipment inspection on catalyst cargo is non-negotiable. The COA spec on a refinery hydroprocessing catalyst can include surface area (BET), pore volume, mechanical crush strength, attrition index, and active-metal weight percentages, every parameter independently testable. A catalyst batch that misses on attrition can pass surface area and still cause unit upset within weeks of charge. Independent third-party verification at the factory is the only real protection.

Documentation chain
Terms that come up on every catalysts shipment
-
HS Code, Harmonized System Code
A six-digit international product classification code used by customs authorities worldwide to identify goods, assess duties, and apply trade controls. Countries extend the six-digit base with additional digits for tariff and statistical purposes (10-digit HTS in the US, 8-digit CN code in the EU, 10-digit AHECC in Australia).
-
Section 301, Section 301 Tariffs
Additional tariffs imposed by the United States on Chinese-origin goods under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974. The current List 1, 2, 3, and 4A tariffs add 7.5 to 25 percent on top of the standard MFN duty rate, applied at HS-code level.
-
FOB, Free On Board
Incoterm under which the seller delivers the goods on board the vessel at the named port of shipment. Risk and cost transfer to the buyer once the cargo crosses the ship's rail. The buyer arranges and pays for sea freight, marine insurance, and all destination-side costs.
-
COA, Certificate of Analysis
A document issued by the manufacturer (or by an accredited third-party lab) certifying that a specific batch of a chemical or material meets the agreed specification. Lists tested parameters, results, the test methods used, and a batch number that ties back to production.
-
SGS, SGS Pre-Shipment Inspection
Independent third-party inspection conducted by SGS (Société Générale de Surveillance), or comparable bodies like Bureau Veritas and Intertek, at the factory before a chemical or industrial cargo is loaded for export. Verifies quantity, packaging, labelling, and conformity to the agreed specification.
