Industrial Acids from China
Sulphuric acid, hydrochloric acid, hydrobromic acid, phosphoric acid, citric acid, oxalic acid, and other inorganic and organic acids for industrial use.
Industrial acids cover both inorganic (sulphuric, hydrochloric, hydrobromic, phosphoric, nitric) and organic (citric, oxalic, formic, acetic, glycolic, lactic) chemistry. Most are Class 8 corrosive DG cargo with PG II or PG III packaging requirements; the exception is citric acid in solid form, which is non-DG and a high-volume bulk export from China.
Acid shipping is documentation-heavy. The MSDS Section 14, the DG Declaration, the UN code on the packaging, the hazard labels, and the container placards all reconcile to the specific UN number, and acid concentrations often determine which UN number applies. Hydrochloric acid above 50 percent has a different shipping classification than below 50 percent. Sulphuric acid has multiple UN numbers depending on concentration and presence of oleum. Get the concentration right on the spec sheet before the factory begins production.
Citric acid is a special case. Non-DG, FCC and BP and USP grades available, dominant Chinese export to the US food, pharmaceutical, and industrial markets. Chinese citric acid has been subject to anti-dumping orders in the US and EU at various points, verify the producer's specific AD rate before booking. Different producers carry different rates, sometimes 0% for cooperating producers and over 100% for non-cooperating ones.

Documentation chain
Terms that come up on every industrial acids shipment
-
IMDG Code, International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code
The international rulebook for shipping dangerous goods by sea. Defines classification, packaging, labelling, documentation, and segregation requirements for hazardous cargo on container vessels.
-
PG I / II / III, Packing Group
Three-tier classification under the IMDG Code (and other transport regulations) indicating the relative severity of hazard within a dangerous-goods class. PG I is the most hazardous (great danger), PG II is medium danger, PG III is minor danger. Determines the required packaging strength and the regulatory burden of the shipment.
-
UN Number, UN Number
A four-digit identifier assigned by the United Nations Committee of Experts on the Transport of Dangerous Goods to identify a hazardous substance for international transport. Required on the DG Declaration, the package marking, the placards on the container, and Section 14 of the MSDS.
-
MSDS / SDS, Material Safety Data Sheet
A document that summarises a chemical's hazards, handling requirements, first-aid measures, and emergency response information. Required for every dangerous-goods shipment and most non-DG industrial chemicals. Modern usage is shifting from MSDS to SDS under the GHS standard.
-
SGS, SGS Pre-Shipment Inspection
Independent third-party inspection conducted by SGS (Société Générale de Surveillance), or comparable bodies like Bureau Veritas and Intertek, at the factory before a chemical or industrial cargo is loaded for export. Verifies quantity, packaging, labelling, and conformity to the agreed specification.
