Tons to gallons calculator for liquids

Know the tank will hold the tonnage before the truck backs in.

Last updated 2026-09-27. Math runs in your browser, no data leaves your computer.

Liquids are bought by the ton and stored by the gallon or liter. Enter either side, pick exactly which ton the paperwork means, and add the SG to see what lands in the tank.

Use the figure from the purchase order or the bill of lading, before any tolerance the contract allows.

The three tons differ by up to 12 percent, so pick the one written on the contract, not the one you assume.

Take the value from SDS Section 9 or the certificate of analysis, because a heavy solution fills far fewer gallons per ton than water does.

Before the booking, screen the name on the invoice. Shipment pre-check is on the paid plans, from USD 59 a month.

Three tons, one gallon, and the SG between them

Every conversion in the tool runs through kilograms. NIST Handbook 44 Appendix C fixes the short ton at 907.18474 kg, the long ton at 1,016.0469088 kg, and the metric ton at 1,000 kg, all derived from the avoirdupois pound of exactly 0.45359237 kg.

From kilograms the tool divides by the SG to get liters, because a liter of liquid weighs SG kilograms, and then divides by 3.785411784, the liters in one US gallon by the same handbook's definition. Going the other way the steps simply reverse.

The SG on the SDS is usually stated at 20 °C or 60 °F against water at the same temperature. Treating it as g/mL puts the answer within 0.2 percent of a full density correction at those temperatures, which is finer than the tolerance on most bulk orders. A product loaded hot is a different story, and the density at temperature calculator handles that case.

Worked example: 20 tons of hydrochloric acid

The booking. You order 20 tons of hydrochloric acid 32% for a storage tank with 4,500 gallons of working capacity, and you size it as short tons. At the SG of 1.16 the Sourzi density calculator carries for this grade, 20 × 907.18474 = 18,144 kg, which is 15,641 liters or 4,132 gallons, and that looks fine on paper.

The failure. The supplier quoted in metric tons. Twenty of those is 20,000 kg, or 17,241 liters, which comes to 4,555 gallons, 55 more than the tank can take, and the driver stops with acid still in the trailer and a return trip on your account. The fix is one of two things: reduce the order, or free up tank space.

The fix. Write the unit on the purchase order and run the tool before sending it. At 19.5 metric tons the load is 16,810 liters, or 4,441 gallons, inside the working capacity with room to spare, and the load ships and discharges in one visit.

Comparing a quote per ton with one per gallon or per pound? The price per unit converter puts both on the same basis at /tools/pricing-and-quoting/price-per-unit-converter.

Liquids expand as they warm in transit, and a tank filled to the last gallon has no cushion. The liquid expansion and ullage calculator sizes the headspace at /tools/chemicals/liquid-expansion-ullage-calculator.

Frequently asked

How many gallons are in a ton of liquid?

Divide the weight by the weight of one gallon. A short ton is 2,000 lb and a gallon weighs SG × 8.3454 lb, so a short ton of a liquid at SG 1.00 is 2,000 / 8.3454 = 239.7 gallons. At SG 1.50 the same ton fills only 159.8 gallons, which is why the SG has to come from the SDS and not from memory.

What is the difference between a short ton, a metric ton, and a long ton?

A short ton is 2,000 lb, or 907.18474 kg. A metric ton, or tonne, is 1,000 kg, about 2,204.6 lb. A long ton is 2,240 lb, or 1,016.0469088 kg. All three figures are from NIST Handbook 44 Appendix C, and the gap between the smallest and largest is 12 percent, enough to overfill a tank.

Which ton does a supplier mean when the quote just says ton?

You cannot tell from the word alone, and that is the problem. A quote built up in kilograms is normally per metric ton, while NIST Handbook 44 notes the long ton is used commercially only to a very limited extent, usually in restricted industrial fields. Put the unit in writing on the purchase order, as MT of 1,000 kg or short ton of 2,000 lb.

How many liters are in a metric ton?

A metric ton is 1,000 kg, and a liter of liquid weighs SG kilograms, so the answer is 1,000 / SG liters. Water at SG 1.00 is 1,000 liters per tonne, a solvent at SG 0.80 is 1,250 liters, and a solution at SG 1.25 is 800 liters. Take the SG from Section 9 of the SDS for the grade you are buying.
