How the NFPA 704 diamond is read
The diamond splits into four quadrants: health in blue on the left, flammability in red at the top, instability in yellow on the right, and special hazards in white at the bottom. The three colored quadrants each carry a number from 0 to 4, and the white one carries a symbol such as a struck through W for materials that react violently with water or OX for oxidizers.
Every level description on this page is quoted from the NOAA CAMEO Chemicals reference page on the NFPA diamond, which summarizes the standard for emergency responders. CAMEO also notes that the diamond is used at fixed locations such as production facilities, warehouses, storage tanks, and storage sheds, and on some transported containers.
The download is a plain vector drawing in the standard layout, sized for a sign maker to scale up. NFPA 704 sets its own rules on sign size and placement that this tool does not check, so hand the sign maker the current edition along with the file.
Worked example: one sign for a shared store
The booking. A chemical store holds a cleaning concentrate whose supplier rates it health 2, flammability 0, instability 0. The site manager copies those three numbers onto the door sign as 2, 0, 0, which looks fine on paper.
The failure. The same room also holds drums of a solvent rated flammability 3, and the sign tells a fire crew there is nothing in there that burns. CAMEO Chemicals notes that a sign for a location may show the highest value in each category for any chemical stored there, so a responder reading this door gets the wrong picture. Either the sign changes, or the solvent moves out.
The fix. Take the highest rating in each category across everything in the room, which gives health 2, flammability 3, instability 0. Draw that diamond here, download the SVG for the sign maker, and the door now warns the crew about the solvent before they open it.
Labelling the containers inside the store as well? The GHS label maker builds a printable label with pictograms and the hazard and precautionary statement text at /tools/chemicals/ghs-label-maker.
Shipping the same drums in a container? The UN packaging code decoder reads the marks stamped on the drum and tells you what the packaging is approved for at /tools/chemicals/un-packaging-code-decoder.
Frequently asked
What do the four colors on an NFPA 704 diamond mean?
Blue on the left is health, red at the top is flammability, yellow on the right is instability, and white at the bottom carries special hazards. Each colored quadrant holds a number from 0 to 4, and NOAA CAMEO Chemicals sums up the rule as the higher the number, the higher the risk.
Is NFPA rating 4 the same as GHS category 4?
No, the two scales run in opposite directions. CAMEO Chemicals points out that the hazard categories in SDS Section 2 under the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard use 1 for the most hazardous and 4 for the least, while NFPA 704 uses 4 for the most severe. Copying a GHS category straight into the diamond flips the warning upside down.
What does the W with a line through it mean?
It marks materials that react violently or explosively with water, and CAMEO Chemicals shows it as a W struck through or the words "No water". OX in the same white quadrant marks materials that possess oxidizing properties. The tool draws either one, or any other text you type for the white quadrant.
Where do I find the NFPA ratings for a chemical?
The tool draws the diamond; it does not assign ratings, which follow the criteria in NFPA 704 itself. CAMEO Chemicals shows the NFPA diamond in the Chemical Identifiers section of a datasheet when one is available, and the supplier may give ratings on the SDS. Where several chemicals share a room, CAMEO notes that the sign may show the highest value in each category for any chemical there.
